Property damage from a fallen tree during a storm

By May 21, 2025Insurance

Storm season is here and can bring about a lot of concern when it comes to property damage, especially with fallen trees.

Fallen trees can cause significant damage to homes, cars, and even power lines, often leading to costly repairs and insurance claims.

To help minimize the risk, here are a few proactive steps to take:

  • Regularly inspect trees on your property for signs of disease, rot, or structural weakness.

  • Have branches that overhang your home, car, or power lines trimmed by a professional.

  • Remove dead or damaged trees promptly before a storm can uproot them.

Even with the best precautions, damage from falling trees can still happen.

You might be wondering who is responsible if a tree falls and damages both a neighbor’s property and yours.

In most cases, the property owner where the tree landed is responsible for the damage. However, there are exceptions. If the tree was visibly dead or damaged and the owner neglected to address it, the liability may lie with the tree’s owner.

“Who pays if a neighbor’s tree falls on my car?”

In most cases, the comprehensive coverage from the vehicle owner’s auto insurance would cover tree damage, regardless of where the tree came from. Once again though, If the neighbor’s tree was dead or poorly maintained their homeowner’s insurance could be responsible for the damage.

It’s always a good idea to review your auto and homeowners insurance policies to make sure you’re fully covered for incidents like this.
