Make your smoke alarm part of your Spring cleaning

By March 27, 2024Insurance

As we approach the spring season, it’s a great time to prioritize home safety and ensure that all our essential systems are in proper working order. One crucial aspect that often gets overlooked is the smoke alarm and C02 detectors.

Smoke alarms and C02 detectors play a vital role in keeping our homes and loved ones safe. However, they require regular maintenance and attention to ensure their effectiveness.

Here are a few simple steps to follow:

1. Test the smoke alarm: Press the test button on your smoke alarm to ensure it’s functioning correctly. If the alarm doesn’t sound, replace the batteries immediately.
2. Clean the alarm: Gently vacuum the smoke alarm to remove any dust or debris that may have  accumulated. This helps maintain its sensitivity.
3. Check the expiration date: Smoke alarms and C02 detectors have a limited lifespan. If your alarm is more than ten years old, it’s time to replace it with a new one.

4. Battery-only carbon monoxide detectors tend to go through batteries more frequently than expected. Plug-in detectors with a battery backup (for use if power is interrupted) provide less battery-changing maintenance.

Remember, a properly functioning smoke alarm and C02 detector can save lives.  By incorporating this simple task into your spring cleaning routine, you’re taking a proactive step towards ensuring the safety of your home and family.
