Beware of storm-chasing contractors

By April 7, 2026Insurance

With spring and storm season upon us, I wanted to share an important reminder to help protect you and your home.

After severe weather, it’s common for “storm-chasing” contractors to go door-to-door offering quick repairs. While some may seem helpful, many are unlicensed, uninsured, or may perform subpar work—leaving homeowners with bigger issues down the road.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself:

  1. Use established, recommended local contractors.

  2. Get several written estimates.

  3. Keep a copy of the written, signed contract.

  4. Do not pay for repairs in cash.

  5. Do not pay off the balance until repairs are finished to your satisfaction.

  6. Ask to see state licenses and local permits. Roofers must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Public adjusters must be licensed by the Illinois Department of Insurance.

  7. Verify the contractor has proper insurance.

If your home experiences storm damage, it’s always best to contact your insurance agent first so we can guide you through the proper claims process and recommend trusted professionals.
